The Best Things in Parks & Rec Are Free

Behind the Boom
When we hear the word “waterfalls,” we often immediately think of Niagara Falls. But, believe it or not, you don’t have to head all the way up to Canada to see these natural wonders. There are plenty of parks throughout Pennsylvania that are home to waterfalls. In fact, there are over 150 of them! And what better time than summer to make a plan to visit them? (A little spritz in 90 degree weather never hurt anyone!) From falls that are great for viewing to falls that are great for canoeing, PA has the variety, and beauty, to make your summer quite refreshing.
Niagara Falls in PA?

You read that right! We’ve got our own here in the Keystone State. Bushkill Falls is known as the Niagara of Pennsylvania. Up in the Pocono Mountains, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of eight different waterfalls—not to mention two miles of trails and gorgeous scenic bridges and walkways. Make a full trip out of it—Bushkill has lodging and plenty of other things to do (after you’ve seen the falls, of course).
Take a Hike

Some of the best ways to view waterfalls is to earn them through a nice hike. There’s multiple paths in PA specifically built to enjoy the wonderful cascading waters of the falls. Ricketts Glen State Park is just one of them. Those wild, free-flowing falls are just perfect for a pause while on a hike. Ganoga Falls within the park is 94 feet tall (the highest of their 22!)
Speaking of the Poconos, you may want to check out Silverthread and Dingmans Falls. At a whopping 130 feet, Dingmans Falls is actually the second tallest waterfall in the state! It is also notably handicap accessible—allowing everyone and anyone to view the beauty of the falls!
Hit the Water

Don’t just stand there, get in! While most waterfall areas are not safe for swimming—some have waterways that are perfect for canoeing and boating. That way you can not only have your water sports, you can have a great view while you’re at it.
Lehigh Gorge State Park is known for whitewater rafting and boating. The perk? It’s also known for its gorgeous waterfalls. There are even areas to have a picnic near the waters!
Lesser known is Ohiopyle State Park with its famous Yough (pronounced “yawk,” FYI) that’s ideal for whitewater boating. Nearby are plenty of incredible falls to check out, including Cucumber Falls, which even has a small shallow area for dipping your toes in on those especially sweltering days.
Good for the Eyes and Your Health
Did you know that looking at water actually has health benefits? Some studies have shown reduced blood pressure, lowered heart rate, and more mental relaxation—even in some cases showing to have a greater effect than green spaces. Next time you’re feeling down, head out to a fall for a pick-me-up!
